Our Yesterdays

Minutes from a meeting on 24th June 1738

(original spelling and abbreviations preserved)

Our earliest minutes.....

24th June 1738 at a lodge of Free and Accepted Masons held at Brother John Horseman's, Thomas Craggs was admitted a brother.

This simple but important statement records that our lodge opened a meeting for which the main purpose was to initiate Thomas Craggs into Freemasonry.

This is, so far, the earliest minutes from a meeting  of our lodge - though it's 'matter of fact' manner of  recording the meeting indicates that this was a normal business event of an established lodge.

The brethren were already operating as a lodge of 'Free and Accepted Masons' - for how long, we have yet to discover.

It would be a further 25 years before our lodge balloted in favour of joining Grand Lodge and received their warrant from  London.
